Thurston County property revaluation notices to be mailed Monday

Thurston County property owners will soon receive assessment notices in the mail — a few months later than normal due to COVID-19.

Revaluation notices will be mailed Monday and the 60-day appeal period ends Friday, Oct. 23, according to a county press release. In that window, residents concerned by their property’s new values can ask questions of the Assessor’s Office staff and, if necessary, file an appeal with the County Board of Equalization.

In a typical year, the office sends out notices June 1, Assessor Drew told The Olympian. This year, the office held them until when they normally send a second batch of notices after talking to other assessors across the state, Drew said, because the pandemic would’ve made it difficult for property owners to talk to staff.

On June 1, the county had just moved into Phase 2 of reopening the economy from COVID-19 shutdowns. According to the Assessor’s website, his physical office didn’t open to the public until almost a month later. In the meantime, the office has been outfitted with now-familiar hallmarks of COVID-19 precaution, such as a plexiglass divider, and IT changes were made to equip staff to offer support remotely so social distancing can be maintained.

“We care, so that’s why we delayed,” Drew said.

In March, the office launched a tool that allows people to search by parcel number, property address, or taxpayer and see how and why taxes have fluctuated in the last three years. That and other data and tools are available on the Assessor’s web page: www.co.thurston.wa.us/assessor.
