Week begins with 13 COVID-19 cases in Thurston County, increasing total to 1,055

Thurston County announced 13 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, beginning the week with a slightly higher number of cases after a total of nine cases were announced over the weekend.

The new cases included six men and women in their 20s. The others were a woman in her 60s, a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 40s and a woman in her 30s, plus a male and female between the ages of 10-19 and a girl between the ages of 0-9, the data show.

Those 20-29 continue to have the highest number of COVID-19 cases, or 234 cases to date, representing 22 percent of the overall total of 1,055, according to the county.

Of the overall total, 856 people have recovered or are recovering, 75 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness and 15 have died. There also have been six COVID-19 facility outbreaks, including one at the Thurston County Jail.

In the region

Pierce County announced 30 cases on Monday, giving the county 6,966 total. Deaths were unchanged at 155.

Lewis County reported eight new cases Monday, increasing the county total to 386. The new cases were a resident in their 80s, two in their 30s, three in their 20s and two residents under the age of 20. Four Lewis County residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Mason County, as of Friday, had 356 cases and one death.

Grays Harbor County, as of Thursday night, had 278 cases and six deaths.

Around the state, nation and world

Washington state had reported 77,235 cases on Monday with 1,953 deaths, according to the state Department of Health.

In the U.S., about 6.3 million cases and more than 189,000 deaths had been reported as of Monday, Johns Hopkins University data show. Washington state ranks 23rd in the nation for the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Globally, 27.2 million cases had been reported and about 890,000 people had died as of Monday, the data show. On Monday, India’s case count surpassed Brazil’s, making it the country with the second highest number of cases, behind the United States.
