Another fire in west Olympia burns land near Haggen grocery store

Olympia fire crews were once again busy with a fire in west Olympia, a day after the department dealt with three fires in the same area on Thursday.

About 1 p.m. Friday, crews were dispatched to a site just north of the Haggen grocery store on Cooper Point Road, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Buchanan said.

The blaze burned about an acre of brush, he said. He had no information on how the fire started, Buchanan said.

In addition to Olympia fire crews, the state Department of Natural Resources dropped water on the fire from a helicopter. Olympia fire also received support from crews with McLane/Black Lake and Lacey Fire District 3.

Buchanan said once his crews were done mopping up hot spots, the scene would be turned over to DNR.

Olympia fire crews crews on Thursday were dispatched to fires at the corner of Capital Mall near Cooper Point Road, the 1200 block of Black Lake Boulevard and an area near Westside Lanes off Harrison Avenue, The Olympian reported.

Battalion Chief J.D. Young described the three fires as suspicious. However, he also said there’s a chance that the fires near Cooper Point Road and Black Lake Boulevard were triggered by cigarettes tossed out of vehicles because of their proximity to passing traffic.

He said the fire near Westside Lanes was the most suspicious because it’s not easily accessible. That fire burned brush. The other fires burned landscaped areas, he said.

Although suspicious, Young said fire crews didn’t find “evidence that we could link to anybody.”
