Human skeletal remains found near downtown Olympia

Human skeletal remains were found Tuesday near Union Avenue Southeast and Plum Street Southeast, a spokesman for Olympia police said.

There is a heavy police presence in the area, Lt. Paul Lower said.

About 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, two people were walking in the area when they smelled a strong odor. They later reported that information to police, who found the remains about 100 yards south of Union Avenue along the railroad tracks.

Lower described the remains as “highly suspicious” and “mostly skeletal.”

It was not immediately clear if the remains were that of a man or woman, he said.

Police are working with the Thurston County Coroner’s Office, Lower said.

Anyone with information about the remains is asked to call the Olympia Police Department at 360-753-8300.
