Don’t we all need a giggle? Vomity Comedy is back

Vomity Comedy, missing since the world changed in March, is back, and the comedy showcase, happening Saturday, Sept. 19, on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/vomity/) has changed, too.

What was once a weekly show at Le Voyeur will now happen quarterly — or at least that’s what the comedy collective Vomity in Progress has planned.

One thing that hasn’t changed is that Vomity is still a live show — not happening via Zoom. Though the audience will be watching online, the comedians will be together as they perform.

“This is us trying to find a way to make a platform for comedy in a pandemic — a platform that’s socially distanced and still feels like a show,” said Lou Ferrighoe (aka Lou Lopez), who’s hosting Saturday’s show.

The collective, made up of comedians Ferrighoe, Khadija Hassan, Danica Marie, Umi Om and Jane Tovar, is hoping to arrange to have a pianist playing between sets, as is the Vomity tradition, Ferrighoe said.

The laughs, though, will be provided by a laugh track that will be cued to play when an audience member reacts to the show with a heart icon.

Now as before, Vomity is not just about comedy but also about inclusion and community.

“We are in the midst of a battle against white supremacy and a pandemic and fully feeling the effects of climate change within our day to day, and yet there still needs to be a space within those truths to laugh, to join in communion, to cater to our communities, and that is what Vomity In Progress is about,” Hassan told the Olympian.

She organized Saturday’s show, which will feature all of the collective’s members in a lineup that also includes well-known Olympia comedy and former Vomity producer Sam Miller along Ryan Bunnell, Sabrina Lynne, Claire Pellegrino, AR Mannylee Rushet and Nathaniel Wolf.

“The lineup includes some of Olympia’s funniest comedians and best humans,” Hassan told the Olympian. “These are people I admire on and off the stage.”

There’s no admission charge for the show, but the collective is asking for donations to benefit two community members who are in financial need.

“We wanted to support people who are struggling while also being able to indulge in having fun and laughing,” Ferrighoe said. “We decided to set up showcases and raise money.”
