Thurston County COVID-19 cases rise sharply again, up by 22 on Thursday

Thurston County COVID-19 cases continued to rise sharply this week, jumping by 22 more cases on Thursday after county health officials announced 23 on Wednesday.

With three more days left in the count week, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services had announced 66 new confirmed cases of the virus. Last week’s total was 74 cases, while the week before it was 41 cases, a multi-week low. The county now has reported a total of 1,274 cases since March.

Thursday’s new cases included five people in their 60s, four people in their 50s and six people in their 30s, the data show.

Of the total cases, 1,008 have recovered or are recovering, 92 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, and 17 have died, the data show. The county is still dealing with a COVID-19 facility outbreak at one adult family home.

The adult family home is one of 10 mostly senior-oriented facilities that have experienced an outbreak here, according to the county.

In the region

Pierce County added 62 cases Thursday and no new deaths, giving the county a total of 8,031 cases and 176 deaths.

Lewis County reported 19 new cases for a total of 579 and four deaths as of Thursday.

Grays Harbor County announced three new cases on Thursday for a total of 538 and 10 deaths.

Mason County reported 22 new cases on Thursday for a total of 452 and six deaths.

In the state, nation and world

The state Department of Health on Thursday reported 564 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and six deaths, giving the state 88,116 cases total with 2,132 deaths.

In the U.S., more than 7.3 million cases have been reported and more than 208,000 people have died as a result, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Globally, more than 34.4 million cases have been reported and more than 1 million people have died, the data show.
