Driver died after Friday wreck on Steamboat Island Road in Thurston County

A Thurston County resident in his 80s has died after a single-vehicle wreck on Steamboat Island Road late last week, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

The man died Friday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Sgt. Chris Packard said Sunday.

About 3 p.m. Friday, the man was headed north on Steamboat Island Road Northwest. Investigators think the man suffered a medical emergency while driving, then veered off the road. The vehicle then flipped and struck a tree, Packard said.

After the crash, the man was airlifted to Harborview, he said.

Steamboat Island Road traffic was slowed for several hours during the investigation, the road finally fully reopening about 9:20 p.m., he said.
