Shooting near Capitol Lake hospitalizes one, closes Deschutes Parkway

One person was injured in a shooting that occurred on Deschutes Parkway Southwest just south of Fifth Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred just before 12:30 p.m. near the encampment along the parkway, Washington State Patrol trooper Darren Wright told The Olympian. First responders transported one man with non-life threatening injuries to an area hospital soon after the shooting, Wright said.

“We believe that there’s no current threat to the public,” Wright said. “We believe this was an isolated incident.”

On Twitter, Olympia Police indicated Olympia Public Works closed the roadway between Lakeridge Drive and Fifth Avenue for an extended time to allow for the investigation. Wright advised residents to avoid the area until State Patrol reopened it around 5 p.m.

Olympia police initially responded, trooper Robert Reyer said, but later called in State Patrol to investigate. Troopers arrived by around 1 p.m. to gather information, he added.

Wright said investigators are attempting to identify the person responsible for the shooting. The shooting allegedly followed a verbal altercation between two men at the scene, he added.
