Icy roads result in Thurston wrecks; Olympia, North Thurston say no out-of-district busing

Overnight temperatures plunged Tuesday morning, producing icy and slick roads that caught a number of drivers off guard, according to Washington State Patrol and the state Department of Transportation.

Trooper Robert Reyer said Tuesday morning that troopers had responded to 95 collisions in Pierce and Thurston counties — 63 in Pierce, 32 in Thurston — including at state Route 510 near Marvin Road.

A two-car crash at that location slowed traffic and sent one person to an area hospital, although their injuries weren’t considered serious, Reyer said.

Most of the collisions were either one-car crashes into ditches and barriers or spinouts because of the ice, Reyer said.

Road conditions also led the North Thurston and Olympia school districts to announce there would be no out-of-district transportation for students on Tuesday, although schools are operating on normal schedules.

The Rainier School District opened two hours late Tuesday. There also was no morning preschool, according to the district.

According to the National Weather Service, it appears overnight temperatures won’t be as cold in the Olympia area for the next few days, with lows staying in the mid to upper 30s. But overnight lows could reach freezing on Friday.
