Thurston County’s first baby of the year is Ezra Jakob Newton, who was born at 3:25 a.m. Saturday at MultiCare Capital Medical Center in Olympia.

Ezra, who weighed 9 pounds and 4 ounces, is the third child for Kathrine and Adam Newton of Olympia. They now have two boys and a girl.

Kathrine, 33, said Monday that Ezra was a week overdue, arriving New Year’s Day after she expected to give birth on Christmas Day. She spent about five and a half hours in active labor, she said.

Seven hours after Ezra was born, Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia welcomed its first New Year’s baby.

Born at 10:28 a.m., Violet Lynn Wiggins weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces, the hospital announced in a news release. Violet is the daughter of Tiffany Jensen and Charles Wiggins of Aberdeen.

It was the only baby born on Jan. 1 at St. Peter.

Tiffany Jensen wasn’t due until Jan. 13, but her water broke at home Thursday morning, Dec. 30. The couple drove to St. Peter Hospital, but Violet wasn’t quite ready.

“She was just hanging out and not ready to come out until the new year,” Tiffany said in a statement. “We definitely didn’t expect to have a New Year’s baby but that’s the way it worked out and it’s pretty cool.”

Violet is the couple’s fourth child.
