Two weeks after announcing that constituents could again attend Lacey councll meetings and work sessions in person, the city changed course on Tuesday, announcing there will be no in-person option for Thursday’s council meeting, the first of the new year.

The reason? A spike in COVID-19 cases. Thurston County Public Health and Social Services announced more than 1,600 new cases between Dec. 27 and Jan. 2. The cases are being pushed higher by the COVID-19 variant Omicron.

Residents can still watch the Thursday council meeting remotely at its new time of 6 p.m.

Among the agenda items: The council will nominate and elect someone from the council to be the city’s mayor and deputy mayor.

Andy Ryder has served as mayor since 2014. The former Deputy Mayor, Cynthia Pratt, chose not to run for re-election to the council in 2021.
