North Thurston Public Schools will host the first of three community forums this Wednesday to gather feedback on a proposal that would shorten summer breaks.

The state-supported proposal is officially known as a “balanced calendar,” which aims to combat students’ summer learning loss with a shorter summer break. The plan offers longer breaks during fall, winter and spring.

The plan is not year-round school, the district is quick to point out, because the school year would remain the same, at 180 days of instruction.

The three community forums are set for 6-7 p.m. on the following dates and locations.

Jan. 19: Chinook Middle School, 4301 Sixth Ave. NE.

Jan. 26: Nisqually Middle School, 8100 Steilacoom Road SE

Feb. 2: Salish Middle School, 8605 Campus Glen Drive NE. The Salish Middle School meeting also will be streamed online at https://www.youtube.com/ntpsvideos.

The North Thurston school board is expected to make a decision on the balanced calendar proposal in May.
