Child and grandparents killed in rural Rainier house fire identified

A child and her grandparents who died in a Rainier house fire on Jan. 22 have been identified by the Thurston County Coroner.

Steven Edwards, 47, Lorraine Edwards, 48, and Peyton Edwards, 3, died in their home on the 16100 block of Village Drive Southeast in rural Rainier.

Officially, all three died due to “inhalation of products of combustion” and “thermal injury,” Coroner Gary Warnock said. Last week, investigators determined the cause of the fire is not suspicious, South Thurston Fire Authority Chief Mark King previously said.

Fire crews arrived at the home around 1:20 a.m. and found it fully engulfed in flames. A woman in her early 20s escaped the fire, but the other three did not.

Investigators found there were no working smoke detectors in the home, King previously said.

The home proved difficult to access because it was located down a cul-de-sac with a narrow dirt road, the Olympian previously reported. There was also no nearby water supply, meaning fire crews had to bring water on trucks.

Funeral services for the three victims are being handled by Funeral Alternatives of Washington in Tumwater. Funeral director Karlene Gaussoin can be contacted at 360-753-1065.
