1 arrested, 2 injured in Lacey after car smashes into ‘bobtail,’ pushes it up embankment
A 22-year-old Lacey man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence overnight Tuesday after he crashed into a “bobtail” on southbound I-5, near Lacey, according to Washington State Patrol.
A bobtail is a term to describe a semi-truck with no trailer.
About 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Subaru Impreza was headed south on I-5 in Lacey at an estimated speed of 100 miles per hour, Trooper Robert Reyer said.
The vehicle then rear-ended a southbound truck, he said. The force of the collision was so strong that it pushed the truck up a 50-foot embankment where it later rolled onto its side, Reyer said.
Two people in the truck were injured: A 32-year-old Brier, Washington man suffered leg and shoulder injuries, while a 31-year-old Shoreline man emerged with a cut to his forehead. Both were taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.
After the collision, the man and his female passenger got out of the now-disabled Subaru. They first walked toward the truck, then walked south on the freeway to Exit 111, Reyer said.
Lacey police were dispatched to assist State Patrol. They later found the man and woman in the area of Marvin Road Northeast and Hogum Bay Road Northeast.
Both allegedly “reeked of alcohol,” Reyer said.
Lacey police then brought both back to the scene of the collision where the man was identified as the driver of the Subaru.
