Lacey sets public hearing date for controversial Meridian Market & Gas proposal

A long-awaited public hearing on a controversial development proposal in northeast Lacey has finally been set, according to the city.

Meridian Market & Gas, which aims to bring a convenience store with gas pumps to 8808 Campus Glen Drive NE, will come before the hearings examiner at 1 p.m. April 4.

The meeting is remote, which means members of the public who wish to speak will have to do so via a Zoom online meeting.

Northwest Investors LLC of Federal Way aims to develop a 4,000-square-foot convenience market with 1,000 square feet of general office space and four fueling islands, as well as an additional 4,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.

Neighbors have been angry about the proposal for months, raising concerns about the gas pumps being placed in a residential area directly across from Meridian Neighborhood Park. They protested at the site on Saturday and are set to do it again from 10 a.m. to noon April 2, according to an email sent to The Olympian.

Meridian Campus residential owners association President Ron Germeaux told the newspaper he has great concerns about a fuel station going in across from a park and near Salish Middle School.

“The major thing is that it’s an unusual spot for a gas station in the middle of a residential neighborhood,” he said. “There are plenty of gas stations to serve this community.”

Those who can’t attend the hearing can send a letter to the Hearings Examiner, 420 College St. SE, Lacey, WA 98503 or send an email to sseymour@ci.lacey.wa.us. Written comments will become part of the public record if the city receives them before the hearing on April 4.

Information on this project is available at City Hall, or the Community & Economic Development Department can be reached at 360-491-5642.
