Human remains found off Martin Way at end of March have been identified

The remains of a woman found off Martin Way in Olympia at the end of March have been identified, according to the Thurston County Coroner.

The body of Marea A. Hines, 20, also known as “Red,” was found in a wooded area in the 3100 block of Martin Way, near Animal Services, on March 31. According to Olympia Police, Hines had been homeless for the past two years and frequented homeless encampments throughout the Olympia area, though she may have occasionally traveled to Tacoma as well.

The cause and manner of Hines’ death are still being investigated, Coroner Gary Warnock said Tuesday. However, Olympia Police posted on social media Tuesday that her death was a homicide.

Olympia police last week asked the public for help identifying the remains. On April 6, police released information including that the person was a woman who was 5-foot, 4-inches tall, between teenage and 40 years old, with a slender build and dark curly hair.

She wore a T-shirt that read “bitter sweet love Los Angeles flowershop.” She also had dark sweatpants and pink boots with fur. Police found a necklace, multiple rings and a bracelet on her right ankle. She also had heart-shaped tattoo.

Police are still hoping for tips that could lead to solving the crime. Anyone with information regarding the case can call the Olympia PD Detective Division at 360-753-8300 or CrimeStoppers of South Sound at 800-222-8477.
