Slow-moving train crashes into car Tuesday morning between Yelm and Rainier

An 18-year-old driver suffered minor injuries when her car was struck by a slow-moving train Tuesday morning, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

About 8:25 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the railroad crossing at Horizon Pioneer Road and Koeppen Road, which is between Yelm and Rainier, Sgt. Chris Packard said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the woman and her Nissan Sentra wound up on the railroad tracks. Packard said there’s a marked railroad crossing in the area, but it’s not the type of crossing where lights are triggered and gates fall to block traffic, he said.

Train speeds are restricted to 10 miles per hour in the area, Packard said. The Rainier Rail train that hit the car consisted of two engines and three boxcars.

The car was ultimately pushed off the tracks, Packard said.

There’s a marked railroad crossing in the area of the train vs. car collision Tuesday morning, but it’s not the type of crossing where lights are triggered and gates fall to block traffic.
