Lacey sets opening of food truck site near replica train depot

Lacey residents can expect to see food trucks near a replica train depot as early as May 25, a city official told Lacey City Council Thursday.

The city’s parks department is planning to have a reopening event for the train depot and playground at Lebanon Street and Pacific Avenue on May 25, and that event will include food trucks, said Community and Economic Development Director Rick Walk.

Walk said those trucks can then remain there if they so choose until a more official launch in June. The site has six designated food truck spots. It will begin with three anchor tenants, including Tacos California and Lava Bowls, then five additional trucks will rotate through the three remaining spots, Walk said.

When the food truck site first launched last spring, it operated only during lunch hours, but now the vendors will operate from lunch through the dinner hour, he said.

Not familiar with the site? It was next to a former carpet warehouse that was recently demolished for the city’s future history museum.

Council member Lenny Greenstein asked whether even more food trucks could be hosted at the site.

Walk said it’s a possibility and added the site could be home to six permanent trucks. It also might get a lift from an unrelated event.

A monthly Thursday night pop-up market Love Local Lacey is coming to Huntamer Park, one that will feature 50 vendors, he said. The first event is 5-9 p.m. May 19. There’s also talk of bringing that market to the food truck site on Sundays, Walk said, all of which would help to identify the “depot as that civic place in Lacey.”

Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder asked if there were any additional questions for Walk, and Council member Robin Vazquez had only a statement.

“It’s on my calendar,” she about the food truck site.
