Olympia, Lacey fire departments respond to homeless encampment fires early Tuesday

The Olympia and Lacey fire departments responded to two homeless encampment fires early Tuesday.

The cause of the fires was not immediately known.

About 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, Olympia fire crews were dispatched to the 1300 block of Wheeler Avenue Southeast, Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Bossard said.

Crews discovered a quickly spreading fire that ultimately damaged a 20-foot RV, he said. They fought the fire defensively for about 90 minutes, Bossard said.

In the Lacey area, Fire District 3 crews were dispatched to a fire at Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast at I-5, next to a southbound ramp to the freeway, about 5:15 a.m.

Fire District 3 Battalion Chief Tim Hulse said the fire was knocked down by about 6:10 a.m, but crews returned after 11 a.m. because the site began smoldering again. No injuries were reported, he said.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer said the southbound ramp to I-5 was blocked for about 30 minutes while the Lacey fire was put out.
