The daylong downpour on June 9 was expected. But what meteorologists couldn’t predict was that it would shatter rainfall records across Western Washington.

The rainfall total at the Olympia Regional Airport on Thursday measured 1.16 inches, blowing the previous record of 0.8 inches for that day out of the water. The previous record was just set in 2020.

Dustin Guy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle, said Thursday was the fourth wettest June day on record for Olympia. And more rain is coming, but it won’t look anything like Thursday’s storm.

Guy said another band of rain will travel north through Western Washington, bringing rain Friday night and into Saturday. Things should start to dry up by Saturday afternoon, but it won’t last long.

Guy said there’s another chance of rain coming on Monday that could flow into Tuesday before temperatures start to rise mid-week, keeping the dark clouds at bay.

Temperatures are hovering around the mid-60s for the weekend, with lows in the 40s.
