A child died at a Tacoma hospital Monday night after being pulled from a vehicle submerged in Lake Cushman, according to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

About 7:10 p.m. Monday, deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash along the lake in an area referred to as “Party Rock” on state Route 119.

Witnesses said a vehicle had gone over an embankment and wound up in the lake. Two adults initially surfaced, while the child was still in the vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

One of those adults and a witness entered the water again to rescue the child. The child was flown to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, but later died.

KIRO 7 TV news reports that deputies arrested the male driver on suspicion of vehicular homicide.
