The Evergreen State College names Carmichael permanent president
The Evergreen State College’s Board of Trustees has voted to permanently appoint John Carmichael as college president, the college announced Thursday.
Carmichael’s contract has been extended through June 30, 2025. He was initially hired as interim president in June 2021 for a period of two years after three presidential candidates identified in a national search withdrew their names from consideration.
When Carmichael was first appointed, his salary was $305,400. The college announced Thursday that it will remain at its current level.
In a statement, Karen Fraser, chairwoman of the board, praised Carmichael’s performance.
“He has provided excellent leadership as the college has developed new academic offerings, including professional certificates,” she said. “Carmichael has cultivated strong relationships with Washington’s legislators, current and prospective donors, and community partners. He’s achieved all of this and more while successfully navigating the complexities of COVID-19, which has ensured the safety of students, staff and faculty on Evergreen’s two campuses (in Olympia and Tacoma).”
Carmichael, who earned his undergraduate degree from the college in 1987, came to work for the college in 1998 and rose to become the college’s vice president for finance and operations. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Evergreen and a doctorate in education and human resource studies from Colorado State University.
