Thurston County enacts burn ban that will last through September

Summer weather is finally here — and rain is no longer in the forecast — prompting Thurston County officials to enact a burn ban to head off brush fires and worse.

Outdoor burning on all lands regulated by Thurston County are being restricted starting immediately and lasting until Sept. 30, according to a county news release.

The Thurston County Fire Marshal, along with the county emergency services director, the Department of Natural Resources and the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency made the announcement after determining that current weather conditions in the county are at high fire danger level.

The ban applies to residential yard waste burning and all land-clearing burns.

Fire Marshal Joshua Cummings said in the news release that the summer burn ban is enacted when weather and fire fuel conditions reach a level of danger that could harm people and their property.

“The DNR has moved their fire risk on public lands in our region to ‘moderate’ which triggers the county’s process to enact the fire safety ban to minimize the threat of fires as much as possible through the restriction of residential and land clearing burns,” Cummings said.

Recreational fires are still allowed on private residential property in unincorporated Thurston County and in established fire rings in official campground areas, according to the release. Recreational fires have to be contained in an approved receptacle. Charcoal briquettes, gas and propane barbecues are still permitted as well.

You can find more information about burn bans on the county’s website.
