Suspicious fire destroys school bus at daycare, Lacey fire officials say

A school bus fire at a daycare center Saturday morning is being treated as suspicious, according to Lacey Fire District 3.

About 4:30 a.m. Saturday, fire crews were dispatched to the 5100 block of Lacey Boulevard Southeast after multiple reports of an explosion and fire.

Crews found the 14-passenger bus on fire, with flames extending to the trees and a fence, Lt. Ryan Perz said Sunday.

“Fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread to nearby structures,” Lacey fire officials said via social media.

Fire crews are treating the blaze as suspicious because daycare staff said the bus hadn’t been in service for a year, Perz said. They also told fire officials that the battery was dead, so it couldn’t be started, he said.

Lacey fire crews and police were dispatched to a school bus fire at an area daycare early Saturday morning, according to Lacey Fire District 3.
