Man who died in Thurston wreck on southbound I-5 Monday struck guardrail, hit pillar

A 61-year-old Seattle semi-trailer driver was killed Monday morning when he crashed the semi on southbound I-5 in Thurston County, according to Washington State Patrol.

The man’s autopsy was set for Tuesday, Aug. 23, said Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock. His office has yet to identify the driver.

About 7:30 a.m. Monday, the driver was headed south on I-5. Troopers say that just north of the 113th Avenue overpass, the man struck a guardrail on the right shoulder, then crashed into an overpass support pillar.

He died at the scene, according to State Patrol.

Southbound I-5 was closed down, and troopers say traffic was slowed for 13 hours.
