The autopsy for a knife-wielding man who was shot by Olympia police Monday morning and later died at an area hospital is set for Wednesday, according to the Thurston County Coroner.

The Olympia man was 37, Coroner Gary Warnock said.

About 10:10 a.m. Monday, Olympia police were dispatched to a disturbance in the area of Sleater-Kinney Road and Martin Way East. A convenience store with a gas station and a Starbucks are both located near the southeast corner of the intersection.

Laura Wohl, spokeswoman for the law enforcement group investigating the shooting, told The Olympian the man had refused to pay for items at the gas station, then went on to cause a scene at the neighboring Starbucks.

She said Monday employees from both stores called police.

When officers arrived, they got the man to leave Starbucks, but he then went into the middle of Martin Way, she said.

Police were able to talk him out of the road, but Wohl said he had become irate at that point. While officers were attempting to talk to him, he came at them with a knife, she said.

Wohl said Tuesday that one officer fired three shots, striking the man. The man later died from his injuries at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

Details about the officer were not immediately available; however, the officer has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation, she said.
