Ecostudies Institute and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife are set to have a prescribed burn Tuesday morning north of Grand Mound in the Scatter Creek Wildlife area.

The burn is set for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 13. It is expected to last 1-5 hours.

ESI and its partners carry out prescribed burns for ecological restoration, habitat maintenance and fuel reduction, according to a news release.

Prairie, Gary oak and Ponderosa pine habitats in South Sound are highly fire dependent ecosystems that have adapted to frequent low intensity fires. Invasive plants like Scotch broom create undesirable fuel loads that can be reduced with intentional fire, ESI officials said in the release.

Up to 18 acres could be burned as part of Tuesday’s action, according to the release.
