Ensign Road to close for 2 days as city moves more residents to Quince Street Village
It’s been a slow process to move some of Olympia’s homeless population into the city’s new Quince Street Village. So far, 11 people have moved into the tiny homes, with the space for about 100 people in total.
In an effort to move people more quickly, the city of Olympia will close Ensign Road from Martin Way to Providence Lane from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and Thursday, Sept. 22. Businesses on the road will still be accessible via Lilly Road.
According to a news release from the city, some individuals from the Ensign Road encampment already have moved to Quince Street Village, and about 10 more are expected to make the move this week. Those living on Ensign were notified more than two months ago about the move, and members of the city’s Homeless Response Team will be working with individuals throughout the process.
Closing the road allows city employees to remove vehicles that have been approved for removal through the junk-vehicle affidavit process the city established. Once a vehicle is towed, the space it sat in will be cleaned and cement ecological blocks will be put in its place.
All the parked vehicles on Ensign are expected to be removed by mid-October, according to the city. More road closures are expected as more individuals are prepared for the move.
