A man who died Monday morning when he drove off I-5 in Tumwater and hit a tree has been identified by the Thurston County Coroner.

About 5:20 a.m. Sept. 26, Pedro Herrera Jr., 27, of California, was headed south on I-5 when troopers say he drove off the road to the right and hit a tree. The vehicle then became engulfed in flames, according to Washington State Patrol.

Herrera died at the scene.

Although he was identified as being from California, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said the man had been living and working in the area. The man’s medical examination took place late Tuesday, he said.

Following the crash, the off-ramp to Tumwater Boulevard was closed for about four hours, according to State Patrol.
