The Evergreen State College has received a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant that totals $2.1 million that will fund a five-year project aimed to increase access and success for historically under-served students.

The program will boost advising and coordinated wrap-around services, according to a news release from the public, four-year college in Olympia.

The college also will use the funding to create an early alert system that will identify students who are struggling and provide them with resources to get back on track.

“The Evergreen State College was created to bring affordable, world-class education to everyone — especially those who are typically under-served by higher education,” said Executive Vice President Dexter Gordon in a statement.

“This federal funding is an investment in Evergreen so we can expand student support, thus enabling them to focus on their educational success,” he said.

Earlier this month, Evergreen was among four universities – including City University of New York, the University of Minnesota, and Yale University — awarded grants to address rising antisemitism across the U.S. That funding comes from the Academic Engagement Network. The program aims to educate students about the multifaceted nature of contemporary antisemitism, and foster a positive campus climate for the Jewish community.

The grant provides a maximum of $25,000 per year renewable for up to three years.

Nancy Koppelman, a professor of humanities at Evergreen, said in a statement. “Thanks to the AEN, Evergreen can integrate education about the history of the Jewish people and about antisemitism into its social justice commitments. There are so many misperceptions about what it means to be Jewish. Jews are often excluded from minoritized identities that college campuses explicitly recognize. Education about the facts can change that, and so improve campus life for Jewish students and so for all students.”
