Lacey police are reminding residents that if someone calls and asks you to pay for an award you’ve won, it’s probably a scam.

That’s apparently the thinking behind a new scam circulating in the area.

The caller is informing their potential victims that they have won a Best of Lacey award and that it can be theirs for a price.

The amount of money the caller is asking for is reportedly around $100.00.

“Normally, when people win an award they don’t pay for it,” said Sgt. Shannon Barnes with Lacey police.

Barnes checked with the city officials and learned that Lacey is not sponsoring a Best of Lacey award.

If a person has fallen victim to the scam, Barnes warned that it’s next to impossible to get the money back.

However, residents are still welcome to fill out a fraud report and deliver it to Lacey police. The fraud form and instructions can found on the city of Lacey website, she said.
