Lacey City Council names Rick Walk interim city manager

Lacey’s Community and Economic Development Director Rick Walk is set to become the city’s interim city manager.

That’s the action Lacey City Council took Thursday after it emerged from an executive session. The council voted unanimously to authorize the mayor and human resources department to negotiate a contract with Walk to fill in when City Manager Scott Spence leaves to become city manager of Astoria, Oregon.

The council voted twice on city manager-related business on Thursday.

Prior to the executive session, Mayor Andy Ryder gave the council an update on a committee’s efforts to select a recruitment firm to find the next city manager. The committee — Ryder and council members Lenny Greenstein and Robin Vazquez — researched more than eight firms, interviewed three and finally settled on GMP Consultants of Snoqualmie to lead the search.

The council voted to authorize the city manager to sign a contract with the firm.

Ryder expects the firm to create a profile of the type of city manager the city wants after interviewing council members, key staff and community members. Final interviews for the next city manager could be wrapped up by March, he said.
