Friday night storm knocked out power to 14,500 residents in Thurston County, PSE says

Friday night’s gusty winds knocked out power in many parts of Thurston County, and by Saturday morning 14,500 county customers were in the dark, Puget Sound Energy said.

The Olympia area recorded a peak gust of 40 miles per hour at 10:30 p.m. and again just before 11 p.m. Friday night, according to National Weather Service data.

“Throughout the county our crews found trees on wires, fallen trees blocking roads, and branches into our lines,” PSE spokesman Andrew Padula said.

In one area of southwest Tumwater, the damage was particularly bad: four power poles were knocked down with lines stretching for a third of a mile across an entire road, as well as a blown transformer.

About 1,400 customers remained without power as of 9 p.m. Saturday, but PSE expected all power to be restored by Monday.

An estimated 200,000 Western Washington homes lost power for some time as a result of Friday night’s storm.
