Tumwater Starbucks workers say they will strike on ‘Red Cup Day’
Starbucks employees in the region have been active in the fight against alleged unfair labor practices, and there’s no sign of stopping yet.
The Tumwater Drive Thru Starbucks at 5300 Capitol Blvd. SE is joining a national strike called the Red Cup Rebellion on Nov. 17, Starbucks Workers United announced Wednesday. With more than 100 stores participating, employees are demanding corporate Starbucks fully staff all union stores and “begin bargaining in good faith.”
The strike comes on the same day as Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, when red cups are offered with any holiday drink purchase. According to a news release, striking workers will be outside stores noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, handing out Starbucks Workers United-branded cups instead.
“Starbucks partners are the face and cornerstone of the company, yet they are forced into running perpetually understaffed stores, and given inconsistent schedules they can’t rely on,” the release reads. “Conditions like these are what led Starbucks partners nationwide to begin unionizing, and the Company has only responded with disdain and disregard for its employees.”
