Two men from Pierce County were injured Monday morning when a semi-trailer fuel tanker rolled over on Interstate 5 in Lacey, slowing traffic all day, according to Washington State Patrol.

The 43-year-old Puyallup driver and a 21-year-old Tacoma passenger were injured and taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

About 5:50 a.m. Monday, the tanker truck was headed south on I-5 near Carpenter Road when it left the roadway to the left and rolled. Troopers say the cause of the crash was “speed too fast for conditions,” according to a memo released by the State Patrol.

The crash and subsequent cleanup of the truck’s fuel slowed traffic for 11 hours and 32 minutes, according to State Patrol.
