Fire crews were busy Tuesday afternoon battling what Central Mason Fire and EMS Chief Jeff Snyder called a stubborn blaze in a large home in downtown Shelton.

The house, located on South Third Street between Cota and Grove streets, was occupied by two of its five tenants when the fire started around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

When crews arrived, they found flames and heavy smoke coming from the upstairs windows of the home.

Snyder said It took crews about 25 minutes to get the fire under control. Both people who were in the home made it out on their own, one escaping out of second-story window to the roof. Snyder said a neighbor brought a ladder over to help them down before fire crews arrived.

One of the occupants was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for smoke inhalation. His condition was not known Wednesday. All occupants were connected to the American Red Cross for housing assistance.

Snyder said the cause of the fire is under investigation. He said there were more than two dozen firefighters on the scene. Central Mason was assisted by Mason County Fire District 11, District 4, the Shelton Police Department, Public Utilities District 3, Cascade Natural Gas and Shelton Public Works.
