Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders was injured in a traffic collision Sunday, according to a statement from his office.

The two-car collision occurred at 3:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. Sanders was driving his department vehicle south on on Lawrence Lake Road Southeast.

“A pickup truck, traveling east on 153rd Avenue Southeast, pulled in front of (Sanders),” the statement said.

Sanders was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The statement from the sheriff’s office said he was in satisfactory condition.

The driver of the truck was identified as a 30-year-old Yelm man. The news release from the sheriff’s office said the man appeared to be impaired, but added that the crash would be investigated by the Washington State Patrol. A later State Patrol release said the man was 29, uninjured, and taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

No further information about the collision was available. Sanders was elected last November, defeating incumbent John Snaza by a decisive margin.
