Tumwater fire units and police temporarily closed Capitol Boulevard Southeast at Trosper Road due to a large natural gas leak late Tuesday evening.

Fire units responded to the leak at about 10:49 p.m. Tuesday and were asking the public to avoid the area Wednesday morning, according to a social media post. A later update indicated Capitol Boulevard reopened but the signal at the affected intersection remained dark.

Police reportedly closed the Capitol Boulevard from M Street to Lee Street as well as Trosper Road from the Interstate 5 southbound off ramp to the intersection. Crews worked on the roadway overnight and into the morning.

Though the roadway reopened, Tumwater fire advised that police were directing traffic and work crews were still on site Wednesday morning.

“Please drive with caution and give the crews room to work,” the post reads.
