Olympia’s chilly mornings should begin to warm, but potential fire-starting weather to come
The month of May might have felt cold to people in Thurston County, except for that random burst of extra-high temperatures in the middle of the month. Turns out, the chilly mornings are typical for this time of year.
Meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch with the National Weather Service in Seattle said the normal low for this time of year is in the mid and upper 40s. The low on Friday was 42 degrees. He said the cooler temperatures at night have offset warmer afternoon temperatures.
But the Olympia area is already seeing rising temperatures it approaches the start of summer. DeFlitch said the normal high for June 2 is 69 degrees, and it was expected to reach 73. He said temperatures will trending 5 to 10 degrees above normal for the weekend, and even more heat is on the way.
The forecast high for Saturday is 75 degrees and 72 degrees on Sunday, with both nights seeing lows of 45 degrees.
Then there will another brief buy intense heat wave, with the highs expected to reach 82 on Tuesday and 88 on Wednesday. At that point, lows will be around 50.
DeFlitch said the NWS has been monitoring how dry Western Washington has become this spring. He said that coupled with windy conditions this next week could create fire conditions.
NWS has online resources available for fire safety and education. Thurston County Emergency Management has online resources available as well.
