Two people were taken to area hospitals Saturday afternoon after a car collided with an Intercity Transit bus on Yelm Highway, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

About noon Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office and Lacey Fire District 3 were dispatched to the wreck at Yelm Highway and Waldon Drive Southeast, between Spurgeon Creek Road Southeast and Meridian Road Southeast.

A Lacey driver in his late 40s had crossed the center line on the highway and crashed into an IT bus, said Lt. Mike Brooks on Sunday. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the man to lose control.

After the collision, it took emergency responders some time to remove the man from his vehicle, Brooks said. The Lacey man was airlifted to an area hospital; the bus driver went to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, he said.

Brooks said he was aware of only two people who went to hospitals.

Following the wreck, Yelm Highway was closed for 1-2 hours, Brooks said.
