A brush fire was threatening homes and prompted evacuation notices northwest of Shelton late Tuesday.

More than 200 homes were under evacuation notices in the McEwan Prairie area as of 7 p.m., according to a posting on the Central Mason Fire Facebook page

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which was estimated at more than 200 acres.

”There are approximately six aircraft and multiple crews from out of the area assisting,” fire officials said in the post. Central Kitsap had deployed a water tender to Shelton, according to its Facebook post.

The following areas were under immediate evacuation orders:

  • Rainbow Lake
  • East McEwan Prairie Road
  • Mason Lake Road from state Route 3 to Lake Limerick, but not the lake itself
  • East John’s Prairie Road from state Route 3 to Bastone Cutoff.

The Oak Park area is under a Level 2 evacuation, which means residents should be prepared to leave. A Level 1 order means for residents to be on alert.

Law enforcement will be making contact with homeowners who live in areas where evacuations may become necessary, the post reads.
