The McEwan Fire north of Shelton, which has burned 244 acres and triggered evacuations last week, is now 55% contained, fire officials said in an update Sunday.

The fire, which is still under investigation, started about 2 p.m. July 4.

“Crews are mopping up and are continuing to strengthen and re-enforce the control lines around the fire perimeter, which is helping improve containment of the fire,” said officials with the Western Incident Management Team.

Over 180 people have been involved in fighting the fire.

Some other status updates:

Evacuations: No changes. However, evacuation levels are expected to be reduced by 9 a.m. Monday, July 10, according to the news release.

The Rainbow Lake neighborhood, Little Bear Lane, all of McEwan Drive, John’s Prairie Road from Batstone Cut-Off to state Route 3 and Hiawatha neighborhood are still under a Level 2 order, which means get set to evacuate.

Evergreen Drive and Oak Park are under a Level 1 order, which means be ready to leave.

Weather: No rain is in the forecast.

Road Closures: McEwan Prairie Road remains closed to traffic, but is expected to reopen at 9 a.m. July 10. Crews are using McEwan Prairie Road to work and use as an access and staging point. Some equipment is parked along the road, partially blocking traffic lanes.

An information hotline about the fire can be reached at 360-427-9670 Ext. 100.
