Did you know that July 14 is Shark Awareness Day? On Saturday, you can learn all about sharks at the Puget Sound Estuarium in Olympia.

The Estuarium is holding a Shark Talk and Dissection event from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday to kick off its Summer Shark Spree series. The marine life center is dissecting a shark on four days in July and August. The center also has two upcoming free admission days planned.

Saturday’s event is being hosted by Sandy Zeiner, shellfish and enforcement policy analyst with the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. Zeiner will be dissecting a spiny dogfish shark, according to Clarissa Felling, program and volunteer coordinator at the Puget Sound Estuarium.

All animals the facility receives had previously died of natural causes, are bycatch or had been sourced sustainably, according to the estuarium..

Facility entree fees are $8 per family and $5 for adults. Anyone using an EBT card can get in for free.

Here are all other upcoming events for the Summer Shark Spree:

  • Free admission day: Sunday, July 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Virtual talk and shark discussion: Sunday, July 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
