An 85-year-old driver triggered a two-vehicle wreck in Mason County Monday afternoon, according to Washington State Patrol.

The 85-year-old woman and her 75-year-old male passenger, both from Neah Bay, were injured. The driver was taken to St. Michael Medical Center in Kitsap County, while the passenger was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the State Patrol.

Troopers say a failure to yield triggered the crash.

About 12:40 p.m. Monday, the Neah Bay vehicle was headed south on state Route 3, east of Hood Canal. Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man from Montana was driving north on the same highway.

Troopers say southbound traffic was stopped for a driver trying to make a left turn. However, the Neah Bay driver failed to yield to traffic and swerved into the northbound lane, crashing into the Montana man’s vehicle. He was not hurt, according to State Patrol.

The road was partially blocked for five hours.
