Why were there so many law enforcement vehicles in downtown Olympia Friday afternoon?
A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes Friday afternoon, following a standoff with police and Thurston County SWAT in downtown Olympia.
The man, who was wanted for a shooting incident earlier in the month, was located about 3:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in an apartment on the seventh floor of the 123-4th Apartments at Fourth Avenue and Columbia Street.
When police knocked on the door, a woman answered. Olympia detectives could see the man in the unit, although he refused to come out, said Police Lt. Paul Lower.
The scene was then turned over to the Thurston County SWAT team, who negotiated with the man for about three hours before he was taken into custody, Lower said.
Detectives arrived at the apartment building because of an investigation that started on Aug. 2.
About 5 a.m. on that date, police were dispatched to a report of shots fired in an apartment building in the 600 block of Capitol Way South. An altercation in a hallway was followed by multiple shots being fired. No one was hurt, but police did find three bullets in the hallway, Lower said.
The 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. The 30-year-old woman at the apartment also was arrested on suspicion of rendering criminal assistance because she denied that the man was in the unit, Lower said.
