All lanes of northbound Interstate 5 in Lacey are blocked and traffic is being rerouted after a driver hit and killed a pedestrian Monday evening, according to Washington State Patrol.

Troopers were dispatched to northbound I-5 at Carpenter Road about 5:50 p.m. The pedestrian died at the scene, Trooper John Dattilo said.

The driver who crashed into that person was not impaired, he added.

Northbound traffic is being diverted to Exit 109 and to Martin Way East in Lacey, according to the state Department of Transportation, and some drivers are being directed to turn around in the median and head south, Dattilo said.

The northbound lanes could be closed a few more hours as they continue to process the scene in rainy and dark conditions, he said.

About 6:40 p.m., WSDOT officials said the traffic backup was three miles long.
