Dontae Payne’s successful bid for mayor of Olympia means his seat on the City Council will be vacant as of Dec. 31. The city council now must appoint a new council member, and the application is live on the city’s website.

The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Dec. 15.

Whoever is appointed to Position #6 on the council will serve until someone is elected in 2025, at the end of the position’s four-year, nonpartisan term.

Applicants will be required to include their resume, a cover letter, proof of voter registration, and verification that they reside within city limits, and they will have to answer a number of questions. A map of Olympia city limits can be found online.

All application materials have to be submitted electronically, according to the release. The application also has to be signed before being sent to the council’s executive services assistant Dawn Carvalho at dcarvalh@ci.olympia.wa.us.

The City Council discussed on Nov. 21 how it would go about appointing a new member. Current council members will review applications on Jan. 2, followed by interviews Jan. 8. The new member is expected to be seated at the Jan. 9 council meeting.
