It’s that time of year again: Crews have to shut down lanes of I-5 on the Nisqually River Bridge for annual cleaning.

Northbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and March 10.

Drivers should expect delays and congestion in the area, especially later in the morning, according to an announcement from the state Department of Transportation

It’s advised that travelers add time to their commutes or plan to travel before or after the scheduled cleaning time.

Southbound closures will be scheduled at a later date, according to the release.

WSDOT says cleaning bridges improves efficiency of the department’s bridge inspection program and helps keep bridges in good working order.
