The Olympia area has set new high temperature records during a recent streak of scorching heat, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

The previous high temperature record for July 7-9 was 95. And all three days — Sunday, Monday and including today — have been broken or are about to fall, said NWS meteorologist Matthew Cullen.

On Sunday at the official weather site at the Olympia Regional Airport, the daytime high was 97 degrees, followed by a high of 99 degrees on Monday, Cullen said.

Tuesday’s previous record high — also 95 degrees — is expected to be shattered because the Olympia area daytime high is forecast to reach 99 or 100 degrees, he said.

After Tuesday, high temperatures will drop a bit, down to around 85 degrees for the remainder of the week, Cullen said.

Perhaps most welcome for area residents without air conditioning tossing and turning in their sleep: Overnight lows will dip into the 50s from the 60s, he said.

“There’s definitely some relief from the heat, but temperatures are still above normal for this time of year,” Cullen said. Normal temperatures are daytime highs in the mid-70s with overnight lows around 50 degrees, he said.

The previous records measured by the National Weather Service:

Sunday July 7, 1953: 95 degrees.

Monday July 8, 2010: 95 degrees.

Tuesday July 9, 1985: 95 degrees.
