Olympia firefighters respond to fire in South Capitol apartment building
An eight-unit apartment building in Olympia’s South Capitol neighborhood caught fire on Monday morning.
Olympia Fire Department and Lacey Fire District 3 firefighters responded at 11:40 a.m. to a fire alarm that alerted them to a structure fire.
The building is a converted house on the corner of 17th Avenue and Franklin Street Southeast, OFD Lt. Jerry Hall told The Olympian.
The fire was started by an electric stove or heater and was contained to one unit, Hall said. The woman who lives in the unit was displaced.
Building resident Cal Hubbard told The Olympian he shares a wall with the unit and was unaware of the fire until he heard authorities knocking on his window to evacuate. He stood outside with his cat in a cat carrier, watching firefighters do their work.
Two fire engines arrived on the scene, Hubbard said. It took about 30 to 45 minutes for the scene to clear.
